The emergence of network enabled medical equipment, telemedicine and wireless patient monitoring systems (like body area networks) pose new challenges to medical device security. The issues here range from patient safety to patient data protection.

How big or significant is this threat?

  • During the RSA security conference 2012 a researcher from McAfee demonstrated a system that could scan for and compromise wireless insulin pumps – with a push of a button any pump within 300 feet would dump its entire contents.
  • During the 2013 S4 conference researchers from Cylance presented their findings about vulnerabilities of the Philips XPER platform, which is a network-enabled cardiovascular workflow solution used in hospitals.
